THE OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES - July 26-28, 2006 - |
On July 26-28 th , 2006 , President of Romania Traian Basescu will pay an official visit to the United States of America at the invitation of his American counterpart George W. Bush. The visit is part of the intensified political dialogue between Romania and the US.
The agenda of the visit will include the meeting with President George W. Bush, followed by a press conference in the Oval Office and a lunch offered by the US President in honor of President Traian Basescu and members of the Romanian official delegation.
The program will also include meetings with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, at the Pentagon, a series of US Capitol visits, meetings with Speaker of the House of Representatives Dennis Hastert and other leaders of the Congress, the presidents of the US Congress Caucus for Romania, as well as a working lunch with representatives of the US Senate, along with those of NGOs interested NGOs in the regional strategic issues. In addition, the Romanian President will attend a dinner with relevant US administration's economic representatives and leaders in the business environment. He will also be meeting with representatives of the Romanian Community in the US , on the occasion of a reception organized by the Romanian Embassy.
The Presidential visit, which is part of the top leve l political bilateral dialogue during this year, will take place one year and four months after President Basescu's previous visit to Washington , in March 2005. It also takes place in the context of the recent conclusion of negotiations and ratification of the Access Agreement regarding the presence of American military facilities on Romanian territory, the strengthened cooperation within NATO, including in the perspective of the Riga NATO Summit preparation process, as well as Romania 's continuous contribution in insuring regional and international security.
The visit include talks over aspects regarding the consolidation of the US-Romanian strategic bilateral relation, considering the status of allies within NATO and in the fight against terrorism, as well as the common interest on promoting security and stability at international and regional level.
At the same time, the political dialogue will focuss on the objectives of intensifying the bilateral economic exchanges aiming at reaching a new commercial exchange peak and the need to benefit of the potential that Romania represents for the American investor, with emphasis on such fields as information technology, infrastructure or the field of energy . The objective of including Romania in the Visa Waiver Program will also be addressed throughout the dialogue with representatives of the US Administration and Congress, as well as with the Romanian Community.
