President of Romania Traian Basescu met on May 4 th 2006 US Vice-president Richard Cheney, on the occasion of both officials' participation to the International Conference Vilnius Conference 2006 “Common Vision for Common Neighborhood ”.
The agenda of discussion focused on developments in the bilateral relation, as well as cooperation in fighting terrorism. The US official expressed appreciation for Romania 's contribution in promoting democracy, underlying that Romania is a “very important ally of the United States ”.
President Traian Basescu said that Romania will respect its commitment to stabilization in Irak and Afghanistan . He also expressed hope that the Romanian Parliament will soon ratify the Access Agreement.
The two officials also discussed aspects regarding evolution within the Black Sea Area. In this context, President of Romania thanks the US for the technical support in organizing the Black Sea Forum for Dialogue and Partnership which will take place in Bucharest on June 5 th and to which heads of state from countries neighboring the Black Sea are expected to attend. President Basescu underlined that the organization of this Forum proves the interest expressed by Romania in promoting democracy within the Black Sea Area.
Talks during the meeting also included aspects related to energy security in Europe and the need to insure alternative resources from the Caspic Sea region.
