President of Romania , Traian Basescu , had a meeting on Tuesday, February 22 nd, 2005
with his French counterpart, Jacques Chirac.

    On the occasion of his presence in Brussels where he attended the Summit of the North Atlantic Alliance, President Traian Basescu had a bilateral meeting with his French counterpart Jacques Chirac.

    During the meeting, President Chirac reaffirmed the support of France for Romania 's European integration, highlighting the importance of Romania 's respecting the commitments assumed during the integration process. President Traian Basescu underlined the determination of the Romanian Government to fulfill all obligations assumed during the integration process.

At the same time, the Romanian Head of State mentioned that authorities in Bucharest are aware of the fact that Romania 's integration into the European Union is now an internal political issue as the economic and social compatibility standards can only be reached by internal efforts.

    The talks also included the issue of the Transdniester region, on which the two Presidents agreed that the conflict should be solved as soon as possible, by political dialogue.
