Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu met the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso during his visit to Brussels
Prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu met the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, during his two days visit to Brussels, between January 24th-25 th , 2005.
At the end of the meeting, the Romanian Prime Minister stated that he is “convinced that the government will meet all the commitments Romania undertook”, regarding the justice and home affairs issues, that should be implemented until March 2005, as well as regarding the rest of the commitments to be met until 2007. “We will make all the necessary efforts in order to fulfill the conditions for acceding to EU in 2007. We want Romania to be a respected country and a state with equal rights among the other European countries. In this respect, we will recuperate all the delays regarding competition, justice and home affairs, economy development, freedom of expression, media liberty and the fight against corruption”, stated the head of the Executive.
The Prime minister showed that he came to Bruselles accompanied by the ministers responsible for the most sensitive areas connected to European integration (the minister of justice, the minister of administration and home affairs, the minister of European integration). Ministers will have technical discussions with the representatives of the European institutions on the critical issues in their areas.
The head of the European Commission stated that he was pleased with the open and very sincere discussion he had with the head of the Government inBucharest . He appreciated the “firm commitment” of Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and of his government for fulfilling the conditions for the EU 2007 accession. The president of the European Commission showed that in autumn, the Commission would present a report on Romania 's evolution. „The Commission will be very serious and objective in monitoring Romania . If the process is not sufficient, the Commission will be forced to postpone the integration by one year. But we are here to help”, stated Barroso . He underlined that the European Commission is totally available for offering help for the fulfillment of the integration objectives.
The visit to Brussels was the first official visit to the European institutions made by the Romanian prime minister after his appointment and its scope was to present the priorities and the main lines of action of the Government and the way these reflect the Romania 's accession process conditions.
