There are no delays in the measures taken by the Government for European integration, this was the conclusion of today's meeting between PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu and the European commissioner for enlargement, Olli Rehn.
“The priority objective of the Government is that Romania would meet its commitments in order to become EU member on January 1, 200”, stated the premier. Olli Rehn affirmed that “there are no delays in the Government's actions”.
After the meeting with the premier, Olli Rehn participated at the Executive Committee for European Integration reunion (CEIE), a mechanism that allows the Romanian government to monitor the fulfillment of Romania's commitments in the European integration process and to coordinate the activity of the ministries in the integration process.
In the presence of the European commissioner, CEIE analyzed the situation of the commitments Romania undertook and to which the safeguarding clause refers in the areas of justice, home affairs and competition. At the same time, CEIE discussed the communication strategy on European integration and assessed if the decisions previously taken by the Committee had been fulfilled.
Olli Rehn appreciated the most efficient and consistent way this committee woks. “I am convinced that there is the political will and determination in order to take the necessary actions in the critical areas, in order to meet the accession criteria on time”, said the European enlargement commissioner. He mentioned the reform of the judicial power, the way the laws are implemented, the fight against corruption.
The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the message of support Romania had received through the voice of commissioner Olli Rehn.
“We may promise a correct evaluation when we will present the Monitoring Report and I am anxious to work with the Government, with the Parliament and with the civil society in order to achieve the common objective- Romania's accession to the EU”, said Olli Rehn. He underlined the importance the European Commission placed on the criteria related to the rule of law.
