EU Commissioner Orban: 2007, one of most important years in EU history

Bucharest, Jan 4 /Rompres/ - 2007 was one of the most important years in the history of the European Union, because the member states managed to sign the EU Reform Treaty and also when taking into account other achievements, such as the enlargement of the Schengen area, European Commissioner for Multilingualism Romanian Leonard Orban said on Friday.

He voiced hope the Lisbon Treaty would be ratified by all the member states in 2008, so that it may take force in 2009, before the elections for the European Parliament.

Orban cited among other EU achievements in 2007 the ceiling put to the roaming pone call tariffs.

The commissioner said the European Commission's priorities in 2008 will target four areas as follows: economic growth and the creation of new jobs; sustainable development that will be mainly directed to the climate changes and energy security; an integrated approach to the migration issue; and the matters of immediate interest for the European citizens.

Orban made the remarks at a news conference staged as new chief of the European Commission's Representative Office in Romania, Nicolae Idu, took office.
