Statements by PM Calin Popescu – Tariceanu subsequent to his meeting with

the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki - Moon

It is a great honor to have the UN Secretary General as guest. It is his first visit in Romania in his current capacity.
I have availed this opportunity to reaffirm our constant support in favor of the UN position consolidation at international level. I consider it as beneficial for the international community. We discussed about Romania's direct cooperation with UN which gained new dimensions after switching from assistance beneficiary to donor. We reconfirmed Romania's support for the fulfillment of the Development Objectives of the Millennium. We want to contribute to the United Nations’ global action and to capitalizing the experience Romania has gained along its transition from the status it had before 1990 to what it is now: a democratic country with market economy.
I have discussed with the Secretary General about the development possibilities of the UN structures in Romania, towards centers with a regional and sub-regional activity, for instance the setting up of the regional center of excellence and preparation for the security of peace-keeping operations. We approached other topics, too. We talked about the issue of Kosovo, about Afghanistan, Iraq, about the efforts which the international community has to make so that this part of the world becomes a region of stability, prosperity and for no longer being a threat to global peace.
