Bilateral meetings of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adrian Cioroianu, on the occasion of his presence at the 62 nd session of the UN General Assembly, September 24 – 29, 2007

On September 24-29, 2007, Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Cioroianu leads the Romanian delegation to the high-level political debates of the UNGA 62 nd session. On this occasion, Minister Cioroianu had bilateral meetings with representatives of the US Administration.

On Tuesday, September 25 th 2007, Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs attended the official reception hosted by US President, G.W. Bush, in honor of the heads of delegations present at the UNGA62.

On the same day, Minister Cioroianu had meetings with Ambassador Daniel Fried, Assistant of the US Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, and Ambassador Frank Wiesner, US Representative for the Contact Group on Kosovo.

The agenda of discussions included aspects with regional relevance: the future status of the Kosovo province, energy security and the question of the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe . There was also an exchange of opinions on the possible topics to be included on the agenda of the 2008 Summit that Romania will host in April next year.

Minister Cioroianu met Professor Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Peace laureate, and representatives of the main American-Jewish organizations. Discussions were focused on Romania 's progress on the programs for the study and remembrance of the Holocaust and on the activities of the Elie Wiesel National Institute. It was emphasized the constant approach of the Jewish organizations for enhanced dialogue with Romanian side within the context of Romania 's EU membership.

On Wednesday, September 26 th , Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs attended to the 27 EU-US ministerial meeting. The dialogue of the European foreign ministers with the US Secretary of State, Dr. C. Rice, was focused on sensitive issues of the international agenda: the Middle East Peace Process, Afghanistan , Sudan/Darfur, Cuba . One of the outcomes of the meeting was the EU-US Joint Declaration on Myanmar , a position that reflects the concern of both sides for a peaceful solution of the crises. During the talks,  the EU member states restated their interest for the ongoing progress on the Visa Waiver Program , through the joint efforts with US Administration .

Minister Cioroianu also had meetings with Ministers of Foreign Affairs from Ukraine , Turkey , Iraq , Iran , Republic of Korea , Kuwait , Azerbaijan and Ethiopia .
