THE ROMANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, MIHAI – RAZVAN UNGUREANU, AT THE SECURITY COUNCIL

New York, October 17th, 2005 – In the context of the Romanian chairmanship of the Security Council during the month of October, the Romanian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu , pays a visit to New York .

On this occasion, the head of the Romanian diplomacy will preside over a special reunion of the Security Council, devoted to identifying means of deepening and institutionalizing the cooperation between the UN and both regional and sub-regional organizations , within the stabilization and peace building processes. The Romanian chairmanship of the Security Council will propose, on this occasion, the adoption of a draft of resolution on this topic. This represents a novelty element within the history of Romanian actions within the Security Council.

The Romanian official's presence in New York will also include a series of meetings with high UN officials, such as the UN secretary general, Kofi Annan , and the president of the 60 th General Assembly, Jan Eliasson , as well as with representatives of the regional organizations invited to the SC special reunion – the secretary general of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis, or the secretary general of the OSCE, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut .

The topics of the agenda for the talks with the UN high officials include their cooperation with the Romanian chairmanship of the Security Council - that coincides with an agenda very dense in delicate matters ( Irak , Kosovo, Syria and Lebanon) -, the UN reform, as well as the implementation of the decisions adopted by the heads of states and governments at the recent UN World Summit. The foreign minister will reiterate the invitations addressed to the UN high representatives to visit Romania , invitation that increases in significance in the context of the 60 th anniversary of the UN existence, and the 50 th anniversary since Romania is its member.

Another important moment in the schedule of the visit of the Romanian minister of foreign affairs will be the opening of the photo exhibition “Art Nouveau in Romania ”, displayed at the UN Headquarters, during Romania 's chairmanship of the Security Council.
