Calin Popescu–Tariceanu :" We mark a historic moment for Romania and Europe , through the symbolic planting of 27 trees offered by Romanian people at the inauguration of a commemorative plaque. Their purpose is to keep the remembrance of this memorable day, here in Schengen ."

Address by the Romanian Prime Minister, Mr. Calin Popescu–Tariceanu on the occasion of planting 27 trees from Romania in Schengen

I am honored that Romania leaves its symbolic imprint here, in Schengen in a city symbol of the European construction, where the first agreements bearing the same name were signed, also a symbol of a country that stands in its turn for a symbol, a founding country, dedicated to the European Union, that made more than a partner for Romania on its path to the European Union.

Luxembourg Government constantly supported Romania even in the most difficult moments of this process. We could not express enough our deep gratitude for this support.

In a couple of hours, Romania will sign the EU Accession Treaty at the Abbey from Neumunster . There will be a historic moment both for our country and at the same time for the entire Europe . We are perfectly aware of the essential contribution of Luxembourg Government, of Luxembourg Presidency of the European Council, of other member states, of European Parliament and Commission in fulfilling this dream so important for all Romanians. I assure you that the Government that I am leading will fulfill all its undertaken commitments before Romania joins the European Union on the 1st of January 2007 , as full fledged member.

This date will happily coincide with launching the manifestations” Luxembourg – European capital of culture”, which Romania joined by means of Sibiu city. This will allow us to show Romania 's unique contribution to the EU cultural patrimony.

This way, we mark a historic moment for Romania and Europe by planting 27 trees offered by the Romanian people at the inauguration of a commemorative plaque. Their purpose is to keep the remembrance of this memorable day, here in Schengen .

I could not inaugurate this plaque without thanking the local authorities of Schengen locality, its mayor for the enthusiasm and generosity shown when embracing this project that is so dear to us. And I thank all those who joined us.
