The Romanian Cultural Foundation, established in 1990, is a national, autonomous institution.

One of its priorities:

to make the Romanian culture known world-wide, 

to maintain and foster cultural links with Romanians living abroad, 

aiming to preserve their identity through language, culture and traditions and 

to enhance access to foreign cultures within Romania.

Venue

The Summer School courses take place in Baia Mare, a town with 150,000 inhabitants, which is the county town of Maramures.

Arrival and Departure for the Summer School

The participants should arrive in Baia Mare on the 13th of July 2002. The official opening of the courses is on the 14th of July. The courses will end on the 2nd of August 2002.

Services and Facilities

Board and accommodation: The Carpati Hotel (double bed rooms, bathroom, TV, international phone line);

Meals: breakfast and dinner served at the hotel restaurant.

On weekday mornings, classes are arranged in two sessions with a coffee break, and a light lunch.

Study visits to sites of interest are by bus.

The organizers of the courses have established these standard terms and they apply to all participants, with no exception.

Participation Certificate

At the ending of the Summer Courses organized by the Romanian Cultural Foundation the participants are given a test assessing their speaking and writing skills in Romanian. As a result, they obtain a qualification and/or participation certificate.

Course Framework

A. Educational Section:

1. Intensive courses in Romanian language for beginners:

Units per week: 20 hours of teaching classes (+ 5 optional hours) and 4 hours of seminars on Romanian culture and civilization (optional activity; in English on request).

Purpose: to achieve writing and speaking skills.

bullet

Contents: elementary vocabulary and grammar lessons, activities and exercises.

bullet

Educational aids: textbooks, teaching materials, audio-visual resources.

2-3. Intensive courses in Romanian language for intermediate and advanced students:

Units per week: 20 hours of teaching classes (+ 5 optional hours) and 4 hours of seminars on Romanian culture and civilization (optional activity, conducted in English on request).

Purpose: upgrading acquired knowledge, with an emphasis on conversational skills, and creative activities.

bullet

Contents: progressive grammar exercises on literary, historical texts, etc., combining the study of the language with that of Romanian culture and civilization; activities aiming to develop fluency in communication and to consolidate grammar structures.

Educational tools: textbooks, literary and historical texts, audio-visual means, and practical exercises.

The intensive courses in Romanian language (all three levels) are taught by professors specialized in teaching Romanian to foreigners.

Students make faster progress when grouped according to experience.   On the opening day of the courses, the participants are given a written test followed by an interview.  Students are placed in a group, which is appropriate to their knowledge of the language.

B. Academic Section:

1. The in-depth course in Romanian language and literature

This course is delivered exclusively in Romanian.

The course is recommended mainly for senior university students of Romance subjects, Ph.D. candidates, high-school teachers and lecturers in Romanian language.

Purpose: improved knowledge of Romanian history, literature and language, lexicology, dialectology and literary criticism.

Contents and methods: conferences, lectures, and round table discussions with Romanian scholars, meetings with contemporary writers, poets, and journalists.

Those participating in the course are welcome to make their own contributions (conferences, lectures, etc.).

2. The Course in Romanian Culture and Civilization

This course is delivered exclusively in Romanian.

Purpose: improved knowledge of Romanian culture and civilization (history of the Romanians, fine arts, ethnography and folklore, customs and traditions, social aspects of contemporary Romania etc.).

Contents and methods: lectures, seminars, presentations by Romanian scholars, complemented by a wide range of cultural activities that provide insights into contemporary Romania: meetings with personalities from cultural and political life, and by study-trips.

Creative Workshops

The organizers offer the participants optional creative workshops (for an additional fee) and other cultural and tourist activities.

Workshops are scheduled twice a week (6 sessions in all).

Song and dance: practice of oral expression by learning folk songs and rehearsals for recitals of ballads and folk music and study of Romanian folk dances from different areas of the country. The participants have the possibility of learning several Romanian dances.

Folk Art: lessons in clay molding, weaving, glass icon-painting, embroidery and making trinkets – following local tradition - taught by well-known craftsmen from Maramures.

Cuisine: a course in Romanian cookery presented by a chef. The “creations” are to be tasted and appreciated by all students.

Cultural and Travel Program

On weekends, study trips are organized to the villages around Baia Mare. Museum curators introduce a wide range of topics on the history, geography, religion, and particular ethnographic characteristics alive in the region. The following study trips are scheduled for the standard program:

Maramures – an area with a civilization unique in Europe: visits to historic sites and outings to the villages of Barsana, Rozavlea, Ieud and Bogdan Voda.

Sunday trip to a village in the Mara Valley: observing the Orthodox Church service, lunch with local families, taking part in authentic folk music party.

An Encounter with Oas folk-traditions: a visit to the “Merry Cemetery” in Sapanta and to the Oas Village Museum in Negreşti-Oaş; an insider’s look at the cultural life of Bixad, a village where artists perform traditional music, dances and wear traditional folk costumes.

Cluj-Napoca – an old University Center in Transylvania: a city tour with a pause to visit the Art Museum, followed by a meeting and a talk with professors from the “Babeş-Bolyai” University.

Other activities: Projection of Romanian movies (film-versions of Romanian novels, historical films), attendance of traditional music performances, meeting artists and personalities from the world of culture.

Enrolment Fee: 300 USD

Participants can pay the enrolment fee by bank transfer into the bank account of the Romanian Cultural Foundation.

The enrolment fee covers the following expenses: tuition, study trips and workshops. The Romanian Cultural Foundation covers the cost of accommodation at Hotel Carpaţi (Baia Mare) from the July, 13 to August, 2 and other arrangements listed under Services and Facilities.

Important!

The enrolment fee does not cover transport, the entrance visa (if needed), medical insurance, personal phone calls, laundry services, mini-bar and room service or any other costs.

Application Form

In order to attend the Summer Courses, the applicants must fill in and return the application forms accompanied by a curriculum-vitae and a copy of the document confirming the bank transfer of the participation fee into the account of the Romanian Cultural Foundation.

The deadline for enrolment is the 15th of June 2002.
