of Foreign Affairs
Mircea Geoana was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania in December 2000.
In this capacity, he served as OSCE Chairman-in-Office in 2001.
In February 1996, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the United States of America. At age 37, he was the youngest ambassador in the Romanian diplomatic corps. In March 2000, Geoana received the rank of Ambassador, the highest position in the Romanian diplomatic corps.
Prior to his appointment to Washington, he was Director General for Europe, North America, Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa (1995) and Director General for Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa (1994) for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania. From 1993 to 1995 he also served as Spokesman for the Romanian Foreign Ministry.
Joining the Foreign Service in 1990, immediately after the Romanian Revolution of December 1989, Mircea Geoana was rapidly promoted to the position of Director of European Affairs Department (NATO, European Community, OSCE, WEU, Council of Europe). In 1991 he headed the Romanian Delegation to the CSCE Committee of Senior Officials.
An alumnus of the Polytechnic Institute and, respectively, the Law School at the University of Bucharest, Mircea Geoana graduated in 1992 the “Ecole Nationale d’Administration” in Paris, France. Prior to his arrival to Washington D.C., he served as professor at the National School for Political and Administration Sciences and the ”Nicolae Titulescu” University in Bucharest. Currently accomplishing a PhD in world economy at the Academy for Economic Sciences in Bucharest, he graduated the 1999 World Bank Group Executive Development Program at the Harvard Business School.
Mircea Geoana is an expert on Trans-Atlantic integration. Author of various articles on the subject, he also was a NATO fellow on democratic institutions in 1994. He lectured on foreign policy, transitional economies, and globalization at major American universities and think-tanks.
In December 2000 Mircea Geoana was decorated Comander of the National Order “The Star of Romania”.
Born on July 14, 1958, Mircea Geoana is married to Mihaela Geoana, an architect by training, and has two children, Ana Maria and Alexandru.
Mircea Geoana is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
