2003 was the seventh year in which Romania – U.S. trade balance was positive in the Romania's favor after almost a decade in which U.S. exports exceeded constantly exports from Romania (according to US statistical data).

The total amount of bilateral trade in goods for 2003 totaled 1,075.8 million U.S. dollars , representing an increase of 14.8 % from the 2001 level. Romanian exports to the U.S.A. totaled 729.9 million U.S. dollars , representing an increase of 5 % over the 2002 level while imports from the U.S.A. totaled 345.9 million US dollars , representing an increase of 43 % over the 2002 level.

Romania ranks the seventieth commercial partner on the U.S. (imports), representing approximately 0.048% of the U.S. imports and the seventy-forth on the U.S. (exports), representing approximately 0.033% of the U.S. exports. 

In 2003, the top exported Romanian goods were: 

metallurgical products – 104.3 million U.S. dollars (14.2% of total exports);

mineral fuels and mineral oils – 95.4 million U.S. dollars (13% of total exports);

textile and garments – 92.9 million U.S. dollars (12.6% of total exports);

electrical machinery - 71.4 million US dollars (9.9% of total exports).

machinery and mechanical equipment – 67.7 million US dollars (9.2% of total exports )

footwear – 59.2 million U.S. dollars (8.1% of total exports);

furniture – 56.3 million U.S. dollars (7.7% of total exports).

In 2003 Romania's main imported U.S. goods were: 

aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof – 109 million US dollars (31% of total imports);

machinery and electrical equipment – 53.5 million US dollars (15.4% of total imports);

food  - 53.6 million US dollars (15.4% of total imports);

machinery and mechanical equipment – 41.4 million US dollars (11.9% of total imports);

optical instruments – 18.8 million U.S. dollars (5.4% of total exports).

II. INVESTMENTS

According to the data offered by the Romanian Agency for Foreign Investments, the U.S. investments in Romania, during 1990 - November 2003 totaled 701,4 million U.S. dollars , representing 7.92% of the total foreign capital invested in Romania. In the top of foreign investors, the U.S. ranks fourth (after Netherlands, France and Germany). 

At the end of November 2003, U.S. investors represented approximate by 3.93% , and the U.S. ranks seventh in the top regarding the number of companies established (3,512 companies). The medium level of U.S. investments per company is $201,655.

At the end of December 2003, the U.S. invested mainly in the following economic sectors: 

electronic industry;

transportation;

software industry;

chemical products;

food industry;

trade;

banking;

mining and forestry.
