Title It as You Like

One suspects a beautiful woman

of almost anything

except poetry.

By tradition women poets are homely.

Otherwise you can’t believe in them;

art requires selflessness, solitude, crises, complexes,

glasses with very thick lenses, and of course

teenage acne—a sign of purity

and intense dreaming confined by four walls.

You feel obliged to flirt with a beautiful poet,

to polish her verses,

to suggest other lines of work.

And besides, beauty impresses fools.

A beautiful poet makes critics

more cynical, suspicious, finicky.

One suspects a beautiful woman

of almost anything.

But poetry.

Titlul la dispoziţia dumneavoastră

Pe o femeie frumoasă o suspectezi

De orice

Cu excepţia poeziei

Poetele sunt prin tradiţie urâte

Altfel nu pot fi crezute

Arta cere abnegaţie, singurătate, crize şi complexe

Ochelari cu multe dioptrii şi eventual

O acnee juvenilă, semn al neprihănirii

Şi al visului intens între patru pereţi

Unei poete frumoase te simţi obligat să-i faci curte

Să-i îndrepţi poemele

S-o îndemni spre alte domenii

Şi apoi frumuseţea intimidează

Doar pe proşti

Pe critici îi face mai cinici, mai suspicioşi

Mai conştiincioşi.

La o sută de ani, dacă o mai apucă vreuna din voi,

Când toate femeile devin egale

Veţi fi în sfârşit citite cu atenţie

Şi poate chiar acceptate
