Mrs. Daniela Gitman, Chargé d'Affaires of the Romanian Embassy, took part in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Victims of Communism Memorial organized on September 27 th , 2006, in Washington DC. High representatives of the US Administration, American senators and congressmen, diplomatic community representatives attended the event and commended the initiative. In their speeches at the beginning of the event, US Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula J. Dobriansky and President of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, Lee Edwards paid tribute to the victims of communism and their sacrifice aimed at creating a better world for their children and the generations to come.

Representatives of the foreign communities of former communist countries in the United States joined the event commemorating the memory of their co nationals, victims of communism.

In her remarks, Mrs. Gitman welcome the event and commended the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation for their initiative.

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, a non-profit educational organization, was legally authorized to design, build and maintain an international memorial in Washington DC, to the more that 100 million victims of communism. The designer of the Monument is Thomas Marsh and the dedication event is scheduled to take place next year.
