Olympic legend Nadia Comaneci said she finally has an answer to the question, "How will you celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first perfect 10 this summer?"
Comaneci revealed that she and her husband, fellow Olympic champion gymnast Bart Conner , are expecting a son in July. It is the first child for both Comaneci, 44, and Conner, who turns 48 on March 28. Comaneci recently returned to the U.S. from a trip back home to Romania, where she attended a fundraising event with "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling. She said she did not reveal her pregnancy to the media so as not to distract attention from "Romania for Europe's Children," which raised one million euros for European orphanages. "Everybody there was asking me what I am going to do on July 18th to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first perfect 10," she said. "They wanted to have a special anniversary gala. I was thinking to myself that the only place I'm going in July is the delivery room." A 14-year-old Comaneci shot to stardom at the 1976 Olympics Games in Montreal where she scored seven perfect 10s and won five medals, three of them gold. Her accomplishment landed her on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Comaneci earned four more medals, two gold and two silver. Comaneci officially retired in 1984. She defected to the United States shortly before the 1989 Romanian revolution, and married Conner, a two-time 1984 Olympic gold medalist, in 1996. They reside in Norman, Okla., where they operate several gymnastics-related businesses, including "International Gymnast" magazine, the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy, Grips, Etc., and Perfect 10 Productions. Years after their Olympic successes, Comaneci and Conner continue to travel the world doing promotional work for adidas and other Olympic sponsors. They also devote a large percentage of their time to charitable foundations, including Special Olympics, the Laureus Sports for Good Foundation, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "We're so excited for this next chapter in our lives," Conner said. "We've been so blessed with many exciting moments, but this tops the list." |
