The Embassy of Romania to Washington DC expresses its sadness at the passing of Colonel George Codrea, US Marine veteran and sends its condolences to the mourning family.
Col. George Codrea was born in Akron, Ohio in a family of Romanian emigrants from Palos, Transylvania.
After graduating the University of Akron courses, Col. Codrea fought with US marine troops in the Second World War and during the US campaign in Pacific, when he was wound during a mission on the Guadalcanal Island. He was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and courage and the “Purple Heart” for wound acquired on the battle field. For his entire activity within the US Marine Corps Col. Codrea was awarded with military distinctions including the “Presidential Unit Citation” one star, “The American Defense Service Medal”, “The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal”, four stars. His military activity within the US Marine included participation to the War in Korea and in missions within the Mediterranean US Naval Forces.
On February 4th, 2002, Col. George Codrea was awarded the National Order “For Merit” in rank of Officer, by the President of Romania, for continuous support in Romania’s efforts or democratization and development.
After retirement from the active military life, Col. Codrea dedicated himself to research and promote other Romanian origin soldiers that fought in the US Forces, his contribution being highly appreciated.
