Cupa Davis SUA-Romania: Jucati pentru Teo Peter!

Adrian Fugaretu-Urea

Incepand de astazi, in direct la TVR 1, Romania va intalni, in deplasare, SUA, in turul I al Cupei Davis.

Roddick to lead U.S. in Davis Cup tie with Romania

Wed Feb 1, 2006 1:25 PM GMT

NEW YORK , Feb 1 (Reuters) - World number three Andy Roddick and James Blake will play singles for the United States in their Davis Cup World Group tie against Romania this month.

They will be joined by world number one doubles pair Bob and Mike Bryan in the Feb. 10-12 tie at La Jolla , California , team captain Patrick McEnroe said in a statement.

Roddick, who lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open, has a 17-6 singles record since joining the U.S. Davis Cup team in 2001.

Blake, ranked 20th in the world, has a 6-3 singles record in six ties with the U.S. team over the past five years.

The Bryans won the Australian Open doubles title and have been in the doubles final of the last five Grand Slams.

There's more to the Davis Cup than the action on the court

February 2, 2006

For the United States Davis Cup tennis team, the road to the championship begins in San Diego as it faces Romania in a first-round match Feb. 10-12 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Even though the match is sold out, fans still have the chance to meet team members and take part in some of the Davis Cup festivities. To help kick off the week, U.S. Davis Cup players will be at the Hard Rock La Jolla from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

A concert featuring pop musicians Courtney Jaye and Sabrina Taylor will begin at 8:30 p.m. Jaye, a 20-something singer-songwriter, released her debut CD, “Traveling Light,” last summer. Taylor , a Canadian living in Los Angeles , began singing at 9 and performs regularly on the L.A. club scene.

Tickets for the event, available at the door, are $10 and a portion of the proceeds will go to the United States Tennis Association's Tennis and Education Foundation.

On Wednesday, the Barnes Tennis Center will host a tennis clinic for kids that features U.S. Davis Cup players Mike and Bob Bryan.

The Bryans, twin brothers, are ranked No. 1 in the world in men's doubles and captured the men's doubles title at the recent Australian Open. They also are the reigning U.S. Open men's doubles champions.

The clinic will include a tennis exhibition and a question-and-answer session with the Bryan brothers.

All 25 tennis courts at the center will be used for the clinic. Participants will rotate around the courts where local tennis teaching professionals will offer drills. Kids will also have the opportunity to hit tennis balls for tennis-related prizes.

No reservations are necessary for the clinic but attendees will need to arrive early. The Barnes Tennis Center will provide racquets on a first-come, first-served basis to use during the clinic, however Blum suggests those with tennis racquets should bring them.

Roddick Determined to Win Davis Cup

By KEN PETERS
The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- Andy Roddick is determined to help the United States win another Davis Cup, no matter how long it takes.

"Davis Cup is definitely on the top of my list of priorities," Roddick said Tuesday, talking about the busy schedule he and other players have.

The United States has won the Davis Cup 31 times, but not since 1995, so Roddick and the current crop of young players have yet to take it.

"That's something that's a huge, huge goal for me personally and for us as a team," he said. "It would be so tough not having accomplished that goal, then to sit out and not commit to it.

"I've told the captain (Patrick McEnroe) that I'm committed to this cause as long as he wants me here."

Roddick and James Blake will play singles, and twins Bob and Mike Bryan doubles in Davis Cup first-round matches against Romania that open here on Friday.

Last year, the U.S. team of Roddick , Andre Agassi and the Bryan brothers lost to eventual champion Croatia in the opening round.

Although the United States is heavily favored against Romanian singles players Victor Hanescu and Andrei Pavel and the doubles team of Razvan Sabau and Horia Tecau , McEnroe is cautious heading into the best-of-five matches.

" Romania has a couple of very tough players, good guys that are veterans," he said. " Pavel especially has played a lot of good Davis Cup. Hanescu has had a very good last year, especially. He's a tough player. We expect a tough match.

"We're certainly looking to be primed and ready to go."

Only 23, Roddick is a Davis Cup veteran with a 17-6 record since making his first appearance for the United States in 2001.

He smiled and recalled contributing to the American team even earlier, as a 10-year-old fan at the final in Fort Worth , Texas , in 1992.

"It's what some people consider the best single Davis Cup team ever with (Jim) Courier, Agassi ; (Pete) Sampras was on the team, but he wasn't good enough to play singles. That's how good this team was. Some brother of yours was there, too," Roddick said, nodding to McEnroe.

John McEnroe and Sampras played on the winning doubles team as the United States downed Switzerland 3-1.

"One of the cool things I remember is the Swiss people brought their big cowbells," Roddick said.

He and one of his brothers set out to counter the cowbells.

"We ended up finding these bike air horns. He was on one side of the stadium doing it, I was on the other," Roddick recalled, grinning.

"I asked Jim Courier a couple of years ago if he actually remembers it. He goes, `That was you? Gosh, those things were annoying.'"
