Ambassador of Romania Sorin Ducaru hosted a press breakfast on Wednesday, May 24th, in order to brief American journalists on the objectives and preparations of the Black Sea Forum for Dialogue and Partnership Summit that will take place in Bucharest on June 5th, 2006.

Ambassador Ducaru underlined the significance of the event to be held in Bucharest from the regional perspective and the aim of the Forum to identify a pro-active vision on the common future of the region. He also emphasized on Romania’s role and contribution to promoting democracy and stability in the region.

Also present at the event was the vice president of German Marshall Fund of the United States, Phillip Henderson, Mark Cunningham, Program Associate GMF-US, and Page Reffe, president of the Reffe Group.

The Black Sea Forum Summit to be held in Bucharest will bring together presidents and heads of government of countries in the region, foreign ministers and senior officials from EU and NATO countries, representatives of EU, NATO, OSCE, Council of Europe, BSEC, UN institutions, as well as think tankers and civil society representatives from the region, Western Europe and North America.

The aim of the Black Sea Forum is to create a non-institutionalized and flexible platform for engagement with and within the region, in order to forge a regional vision and a common mind-set and to enhance synergy among existing structures, based on that common vision. The ultimate aim of the process is to transform the entire region into an area of secure sovereign countries, sharing viable market economies, enjoying open and responsive systems of government, and to maintain strong links and interdependencies with the international community, with the prospect of further extending and consolidating the area of freedom, security and stability on the shores of the Black Sea and beyond.
